NEW MATERIALS
The Omer 4 submarine was designed and manufactured during the period from 2000 to 2001. It was used in competition until 2002. Omer 4 is a single-seat propeller submarine.
Omer 4 was the first submarine to be equipped with an electric steering system. The commands made by the pilot are sent to an on-board computer. The latter governs several electric motors that operate the steering fins. In addition, the variable pitch adjustment is also made electric. In addition to these improvements, the choice of materials for manufacturing the hull is different. The hull of the submarine is made of carbon fiber with a high density foam core.
A NEW RECORD
The fastest speed reached by Omer 4 is 7,192 knots. This speed was recorded in Bethesda, Maryland in the United States during the 6th International Submarine Race in 2001. This speed was a world record for propeller-driven submarines single-seater, until its successor Omer 8 comes to dethrone it.
WHERE HAS IT GONE?
Omer 4 is now retired and exhibited at the National Aerotechnical School (ÉNA).
